Efficacy of a combined chemical peel and topical salicylic acid-based gel combination in the treatment of active acne
Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology Aug 02, 2021
Calvisi L, et al. - Whether a chemical peel in combination with a home care-exfoliating and purifying product affords an efficacious treatment for improving mild and moderate acne, was investigated in this study with 45 patients with mild-to-moderate acne. A chemical peel consisting of a mix of salicylic acid, pyruvic acid, and retinoic acid was applied once every 3 weeks for 4 times, plus a home care treatment was received after the healing process. Based on Michaelson's acne severity score and Subject Global Aesthetic Improvement Score, it was evident that 4 sessions of chemical peel resulted in improvement in skin lesions in all patients. In all treated patients, an improved quality of life was revealed by the Face Skin Q questionnaire. It seems that a very good strategy against acne is afforded by the combination of salicylic acid-based chemical peel plus exfoliating home care treatment, therefore, this combination may be employed by physicians as an effective therapeutic strategy for patients suffering from acne vulgaris.
