Efficacy assessment of the high-frequency high-intensity focused ultrasound as a new treatment for actinic keratosis
Dermatology Dec 24, 2021
Seyed Jafari SM, Cazzaniga S, Bossart S, et al. - In the treatment of actinic keratosis (AK), 20-MHz high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) may afford an effective and safe alternative.
This study involved 21 patients (14 men, 7 women) with 108 AK lesions (grades I–III) treated with HIFU; clinical evaluation was done 3 months post-therapy.
In the treated area, clinically complete resolution of the actinic damage was evident in 72.2% of lesions.
Also, a decrease of the AK grade, or partial response, following the therapy was seen in 28 lesions (26%).
Annoying but short pain during the procedure was felt by the majority of the patients.
However, therapy-induced late adverse effects, including hypopigmentation, hyperpigmentation and erythema occurred only in a small portion of the lesions.
