Efficacy and safety of transcranial direct current stimulation for treating negative symptoms in schizophrenia: A randomized clinical trial
JAMA Oct 24, 2019
da Costa Lane Valiengo L, Goerigk S, Gordon PC, et al. - Researchers examined the safety and efficacy of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) vs sham as an add-on therapy for negative symptoms in schizophrenia. They conducted a double-blind Schizophrenia Treatment With Electric Transcranial Stimulation randomized clinical trial including 100 patients with schizophrenia with predominant negative symptoms at 2 outpatient clinics in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Outcomes supported the superiority of active tDCS to sham in ameliorating negative symptoms, with superior response rates (20% improvement) for negative symptoms. At follow-up, these effects remained sustained, and further, there was no association of tDCS with significant adverse effects. Findings thereby indicate that for negative symptoms in schizophrenia, tDCS is an affordable, safe, and effective add-on treatment.
