Efficacy and safety of topical clascoterone cream for treatment of acne vulgaris: A systematic review and meta‐analysis of randomized placebo‐controlled trials

Dermatologic Therapy Dec 16, 2020

Alkhodaidi ST, Al Hawsawi KA, Alkhudaidi IT, et al. - By analyzing relevant randomized placebo‐controlled trials in this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers investigated whether topical clascoterone cream has efficacy as well as safety as a treatment option for patients with acne vulgaris. They explored four databases from inception to 10 October 2020. They finally analyzed five clinical trials, including 2,457 patients (1,357 and 1,100 patients treated with clascoterone and placebo, respectively). Treatment with clascoterone resulted in a significant increase in investigator's global assessment success rates and reduced noninflammatory lesion counts without substantially influencing the inflammatory lesion counts. Between both groups, there existed no significant differences for all safety outcomes, except for nasopharyngitis which was identified to be significantly lower in the clascoterone group. Overall, findings demonstrated the safety as well as the effectiveness of topical clascorterone cream in the treatment of acne vulgaris.
