Efficacy and safety of radiofrequency ablation for treatment of chronic radiation proctitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Nov 01, 2019
McCarty TR, et al. - From 2004 through March 2018, searches of PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases have been conducted to assess the safety and effectiveness of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for the treatment of chronic radiation proctitis (CRP). Six studies have been involved (n = 71; mean age 73.41 ± 1.88 years; 90.14% male). Data reported that pooled clinical and endoscopic success of RFA was 99% and 100%, respectively. It was noted that 85% became transfusion-free post-RFA among transfusion-dependent patients. Findings revealed that pooled mean follow-up was 19.73 ± 9.72 months. Overall, the authors concluded that RFA is a safe and effective treatment in spite of limited long-term data on RFA for CRP.
