Efficacy and safety of opioids in treating cancer-related dyspnea: A systematic review and meta-analysis based on randomized controlled trials
Journal of Pain and Symptom Management Jul 31, 2020
Luo N, Tan S, Li X, et al. - As dyspnea is one of the most distressing symptoms experienced by advanced cancer patients, researchers here examined the role of opioids in the management of cancer-related dyspnea via performing a systematic review and meta-analysis. The databases PUBMED, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials yielded 11 RCTs fulfilling the eligibility criteria and including a total of 290 participants. Meta-analyses were performed on nine of these studies. Low quality evidence was generated for a small positive effect of opioids in cancer-related dyspnea. They identified insufficient evidence for safety as there was adequate reporting of comprehensive adverse events in studies.
