Efficacy and safety of methylene blue in the treatment of malaria: A systematic review
BMC Medicine Apr 30, 2018
Lu G, et al. - Researchers attempted to appraise the efficacy and safety of Methylene blue (MB) in the treatment of malaria according to PRISMA guidelines. Yielded data depicted that MB was consistently shown to be highly effective in all endemic areas. It conferred a strong effect on P. falciparum gametocyte reduction and synergy with artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT). Results shed light on the connection between MB treatment with mild urogenital and gastrointestinal symptoms along with blue coloration of urine. It was determined that MB caused a slight but clinically non-significant haemoglobin reduction in G6PD-deficient African individuals.
