Efficacy and safety of long-term treatment with intravenous colchicine for familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) refractory to oral colchicine
Rheumatology International Jan 05, 2019
Grossman C, et al. - Researchers analyzed 15 subjects with frequent familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) attacks [treated with weekly intravenous (IV) injections of 1 mg of colchicine for at least 12 months] to estimate the effectiveness and safety of long-term IV colchicine regimen in oral colchicine-resistant FMF. They observed decreases in the monthly mean rate of joint attacks, gastrointestinal problems like abdominal attacks as well as in the mean span and severity of bouts within a mean span of IV colchicine treatment of 5.16 ± 2.85 years. They found no grave adverse incidences indicating the efficacy and reliability of long-term medication with IV colchicine in cases who were unresponsive to oral colchicine therapy.
