Efficacy and safety of intragastric balloon placements in 1600 case, an experience from the middle east
Obesity Surgery Apr 11, 2019
Abeid M, et al. - Researchers performed this interventional study with the aim to investigate the efficacy and safety of intragastric balloons that are used as a treatment for obesity, in private practice. They retrospectively analyzed 6-month weight loss data and balloon-related complications in 1600 patients (368 male (23%) and 1232 female (77%)) referred to a private center for obesity treatment. Significant weight loss > 10% was recorded in about 49.3% of patients, weight loss > 20% was noted in 24.7% of patients, while there were 26% of patients who showed no significant weight loss < 10%. Outcomes support that short-term substantial weight loss could be safely achieved with intragastric balloons on their own, with an intensive lifestyle program and supportive consultations, and this strategy may fill the therapeutic gap between pharmacotherapy and surgery.
