Efficacy and safety of eslicarbazepine acetate monotherapy in patients converting from carbamazepine
Epilepsia Feb 22, 2018
Pazdera L, et al. - Researchers attempted to gauge the impact of the prior use of carbamazepine (CBZ) and other antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) with a putatively similar mechanism of action [inhibition of voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs)] on (partial-onset) seizure outcomes and tolerability when converting to eslicarbazepine acetate (ESL). No prominent rise was noted in the risk of study exit due to worsening seizure control or frequency of side effects when converting to ESL monotherapy as a result of baseline use of CBZ or other major putative VGSC inhibitors. Nevertheless, findings revealed the possibility of bigger improvements in efficacy among patients converting to ESL monotherapy from an AED regimen that did not include a VGSC inhibitor.
