Efficacy and safety of deep transcranial magnetic stimulation for obsessive-compulsive disorder: A prospective multicenter randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial

American Journal of Psychiatry Nov 13, 2019

Carmi L, Tendler A, Bystritsky A, et al. - Researchers investigated the therapeutic effect of deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS) for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in a multicenter double-blind sham-controlled study. They randomly allocated 99 OCD patients at 11 centers to receive treatment with either high-frequency (20 Hz) or sham dTMS; daily treatments were provided following individualized symptom provocation, for 6 weeks. Study completion was reported in 89% of the active treatment group and 96% of the sham treatment group. As per outcomes, significant improvement in OCD symptoms could be achieved via performing high-frequency dTMS over the medial prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex and hence, this may be considered as a potential intervention for patients who do not respond adequately to pharmacological and psychological interventions.
