Efficacy and safety of buprenorphine transdermal patch for immediate postoperative analgesia after total knee arthroplasty surgery
Journal of Arthroplasty Mar 25, 2020
Londhe S, et al. - In this study, the safety and efficacy of a transdermal buprenorphine (TDB) patch to conventional analgesics after knee arthroplasty surgery were compared. Researchers performed a prospective randomized study including a total of 200 individuals aged 60-75 years undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) surgery under neuraxial anesthesia. They administered periarticular local anesthetic infiltration and epidural/femoral nerve block infusion to all individuals for 72 hours postoperatively. The outcomes of this study displayed that, after TKA surgery, the TDB patch is more efficacious in lowering postoperative pain and can be safely applied with fewer systemic side effects when compared with conventional analgesics.
