Efficacy and risk of harms of repeat ivermectin mass drug administrations for control of malaria (RIMDAMAL): A cluster-randomized trial
The Lancet Mar 20, 2019
Foy DF, et al. - In this study, investigators estimated 2712 individuals to analyze the impact of frequently repeated mass administrations of ivermectin to village residents on clinical malaria episodes in kids. They noticed a decline in cumulative malaria incidence in the intervention group with 648 episodes among 327 children (estimated mean 2·00 episodes per child) vs control group. They noticed no variation in risk of adverse events among the candidates (45 events among 1447 cases in the intervention group vs 24 events among 1265 in the control group) with no adverse reactions observed. Overall, they reported a reduction in malaria episodes among children due to frequently repeated mass administrations of ivermectin during the malaria transmission season without significantly increasing harms in the populace.
