Efficacy and clinical significance of omitting blue dye injection during sentinel lymph node biopsy before Mohs micrographic surgery for malignant melanoma of the lower extremities
British Journal of Dermatology May 19, 2019
Kim TH, et al. - Whether sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) remains efficacious without blue dye injection in patients who then had Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) for melanomas of the lower extremities was investigated in this study. Researchers assessed patients who underwent MMS with/without SLNB. Lymphoscintigraphy was used for preoperative localization of the primary melanoma and a gamma probe was used for intraoperative confirmation. Overall this study included 72 patients with a mean Breslow thickness of 3.03 ± 1.44 mm, 65 of whom had SLNB. Based on the findings, they concluded that omission of blue dye injection does not compromise the accuracy of standard SLNB, as the success rate was over 98.5%.
