Efficacy analysis of medical and surgical treatments in chronic kidney disease patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Nov 21, 2019
Huang Y, et al. - In the present study, the researchers analyzed the impacts of surgical and medical treatments on chronic kidney disease (CKD) individuals with secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT). In total, 198 CKD individuals with SHPT were identified at Tongji Hospital from January 2013 to June 2017. The surgical group (53 patients) received 78.0 ± 4.9 months of maintenance dialysis, while the medical group (84 patients) received 62.0 ± 6.4 months of maintenance dialysis. The rate of recurrence in the surgical group was 7.5% and 15.5% in the medical group. While the advancement of medical treatment is rapidly changing, surgical treatment for SHPT patients is still an effective way to chronically control serum intact parathyroid hormone and calcium. Complex SHPT patients can also be happy with the outcome of surgical treatment, without increasing the risk of complications apparently.
