Effects of vitamin D supplementation on adherence and persistence with long-term statin therapy: Secondary analysis from the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled ViDA study
Atherosclerosis Apr 12, 2018
Wu Z, et al. - Whether monthly vitamin D supplementation (100,000 IU) improves adherence to and persistence with long-term statin use in older adults was investigated. A secondary analysis of a trial comparing data on dispensed statin prescriptions was performed between participants allocated to vitamin D supplementation or placebo. At follow up, a total of 2,494 participants were on long-term statins. With monthly vitamin D supplementation vs placebo, no improvement was seen in the proportion of those with adherence, but an improvement was observed in the persistence probability of taking all statins after 24 months. Such an improvement was especially seen in participants on simvastatin.
