Effects of transversus abdominis plane blocks after hysterectomy: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Journal of Pain Research Oct 26, 2018
Hong Z, et al. - Given the efficacy of transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block in providing effective analgesia for abdominal surgery, researchers investigated if TAP block is effective following hysterectomy via a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The 13 selected RCTs included a total of 841 participants. Outcomes support that for abdominal hysterectomy, TAP block is an effective analgesic and can reduce morphine consumption after surgery and pain scores at rest and with movement without increasing side effects. However, in women undergoing laparoscopic hysterectomy/robotic-assisted hysterectomy, TAP block does not reduce postoperative morphine consumption and pain scores at rest and on movement, indicating its limited analgesic efficacy for these patients.
