Effects of single nucleotide polymorphisms on surgical and postsurgical opioid requirements: A systematic review and meta-analysis
The Clinical Journal of Pain | Nov 16, 2017
Choi SW, et al. - Researchers in this meta-analysis examined data from studies investigating the effect of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) on postoperative and/or intraoperative opioid requirements. Findings suggested gaining only limited information regarding genetic effects on opioid requirements with the investigation of single changes in 1 gene. Rapid development of whole genome sequencing could provide information on all genetic modifications that might affect analgesic response to be collected. They recommended including data on the individualÂs metabolic enzymes, as well as information on drug receptors and enzymes responsible for drug degradation in the collected information to built a personal profile that could predict individual response to drugs, and guide clinicians on the type and dosage of drug to use.
