Effects of restrictive red blood cell transfusion on the prognoses of adult patients undergoing cardiac surgery: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Critical Care Jun 07, 2018

Chen QH, et al. - Researchers analyzed randomized clinical trials comparing a restrictive red blood cell transfusion strategy to a liberal transfusion strategy in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. The goal was to determine the prognostic benefits of restrictive red blood cell transfusion strategies in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. To pool the results from the included studies, they used a trial sequential analysis (TSA)-adjusted random-effects model. They found that compared with the liberal strategy, the restrictive red blood cell transfusion strategy did not provide inferior outcomes, with respect to 30-day mortality, pulmonary morbidity, postoperative infection, cerebrovascular accidents, acute kidney injury, or acute myocardial infarction, and resulted in fewer red blood cells transfusion.
