Effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and multicomponent therapy in patients with fibromyalgia: A randomized controlled trial
Arthritis Care & Research Mar 12, 2021
Guinot M, Maindet C, Hodaj H, et al. - Alterations in pain modulation by the central nervous system partly explain fibromyalgia (FM). Researchers here compared the effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on pain with a combination of multicomponent therapy (MT) and rTMS vs MT alone. They randomized 39 FM patients with visual analog scale (VAS) results for pain of ≥ 40 mm to active or sham rTMS (high‐frequency, primary motor cortex M1) plus 12 weeks of MT (3 sessions per week combining aerobic training, pool‐based exercises, and relaxation). Initiation of repetitive TMS was done 2 weeks prior to MT and it was maintained until the end of the program (week 14). As per outcomes, there was no reduction in pain in patients with FM who followed the MT program in correlation with receiving repetitive TMS.
