Effects of procalcitonin-guided treatment on antibiotic use and need for mechanical ventilation in patients with acute asthma exacerbation: Meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
International Journal of Infectious Diseases | Oct 31, 2017
Ibrahim WH, et al. - In this work, researchers primarily assessed whether serum procalcitonin-guided antibiotic therapy can reduce antibiotic exposure in patients with an acute exacerbation of asthma presenting to the primary care facility, emergency department or during hospital admission. Secondarily they assessed the need for mechanical ventilation. As per findings, in patients with an acute asthma exacerbation, a potential benefit was evident for the use of serum procalcitonin in guiding antibiotic therapy, thereby supporting the necessity for more randomized controlled trials.
