Effects of pre-exposure prophylaxis for the prevention of human immunodeficiency virus infection on sexual risk behavior in men who have sex with men: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Clinical Infectious Diseases Aug 21, 2018
Traeger MW, et al. - Researchers investigated the impact of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) on sexual risk outcomes in men who have sex with men (MSM) via performing a systematic review. Findings suggest an association of pre-exposure prophylaxis use with a significant increase in rectal chlamydia and an increase in any sexually transmitted infection (STI) diagnosis. Thus efforts to minimize STIs among PrEP users and their sexual partners should be encouraged. A necessity for monitoring of risk compensation among MSM in the context of PrEP scale-up is suggested to assess the impact of PrEP on the sexual health of MSM and to inform preventive strategies.
