Effects of postoperative furosemide in adult surgical patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised clinical trials
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Jan 30, 2020
Winther-Olesen M, et al. - Researchers evaluated the balance between advantages and harms of furosemide postoperatively among adult surgical patients via a systematic review with a meta-analysis conducted as per the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statements, the Cochrane Handbook and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation methodology. The randomized clinical trials that compared postoperative management with furosemide vs no furosemide among adult surgical patients were included. Overall four trials including 325 patients were included. Although findings revealed that furosemide- vs no furosemide-treated patients showed no statistically significant difference in any of the predefined outcome measures, including acute kidney injury, all-cause death, use of vasopressors postoperatively or requirement for renal replacement therapy, but the evidence gained for using furosemide postoperatively in adult surgical patients was of very low quantity and quality and there was no firm evidence for benefit or harm.
