Gastroenterology Apr 04, 2019
Kauppila JH, et al. - Researchers examined the survival times of patients who have undergone bariatric surgery in comparison to those of the general population levels vs obese individuals who did not receive surgery via performing a population-based cohort study of persons with a diagnosis of obesity listed in nationwide registries from Nordic countries, from 1980 through 2012. They identified 505,258 participants. of these, 49,977 underwent bariatric surgery. compared to non-operated obese individuals, survival time was longer in obese patients who undergo bariatric surgery. However, compared to the general population, they displayed higher mortality. Increase in this mortality risk was noted with time. These findings could be attributed to the obesity-related morbidities.
