Effects of nasal packing and transseptal suturing on swallowing after septoplasty
European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology May 13, 2021
Sari H, Atar Y, Kumral TL, et al. - Researchers conducted this randomized prospective study to examine the impacts of different nasal packing methods and transseptal suture technique on swallowing after septoplasty. The sample consisted of 180 consecutive patients with septal deviation. Septoplasty was performed on all of the patients. One hundred twenty-two patients (67.7%) were female, while 58 (32.2%) were male. Whether or not a tampon is used, septoplasty has an effect on swallowing. Transeptal suturing affects swallowing less than other techniques. Although silicone packing is a less invasive method, it, like Merocel packing, has a negative impact on swallowing. In terms of swallowing function in the postoperative period, the transseptal suture technique is more comfortable than the other techniques.
