Effects of marital status on breast cancer survival by age, race, and hormone receptor status: A population-based study

Cancer Medicine Jul 10, 2019

Zhai Z, et al. - Among eligible patients from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results cancer registry program, researchers determined how the prognosis of patients with breast cancer is influenced by demographic and pathological factors. They used Kaplan-Meier curve and multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression to determine the impact of marital status on overall survival and breast cancer-caused special survival (BCSS). Better prognosis was reported among married and single patients with breast cancer, compared to their divorced/separated/widowed counterparts. Across all age subgroups, better prognosis was observed in married patients, while single patients only in groups older than 35 years had better BCSS. The correlation between marital status and BCSS could be influenced by age, race, and hormone receptor status. Single patients with white race and with estrogen receptor positive and progesterone receptor positive status demonstrated better BCSS.
