Effects of magnetic seizure therapy on anterograde and retrograde amnesia in treatment-resistant depression
Depression and Anxiety Nov 12, 2019
Kayser S, et al. - Because magnetic seizure therapy (MST) may be more beneficial than electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for treatment-resistant depression (TRD) in terms of amnesia, researchers investigated the occurrence of anterograde and retrograde amnesia with MST. MST treatment (8.9 [2] treatments) was provided to 10 patients with TRD at 100% machine output—a frequency of 100 Hz and 657.4 (62) pulses per train. Participants were evaluated for retrograde amnesia using the short form of the Autobiographical Memory Inventory. In addition, researchers used an extended neuropsychological test battery, including verbal and nonverbal recall, as well as recognition tasks. Their findings support the cognitive safety and efficacy of MST in patients with TRD. However, the investigators recommended performing direct comparison between MST and ECT in a larger sample before validating MST as an alternative treatment approach to ECT in clinical practice.
