Effects of intraoperative tidal volume on incidence of acute kidney injury after cardiovascular surgery: A retrospective cohort study
Journal of Critical Care Mar 06, 2020
Tojo K, et al. - Whether a decreased incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) following cardiovascular surgery can result from intraoperative low tidal volume ventilation, was determined in this retrospective cohort analysis. Researchers analyzed the records of patients who had cardiovascular surgery. The overall patients included were 338, among those, AKI occurred in 105. The AKI incidence was estimated to be 12.8%, 29.9%, 38.7%, and 34.5% for patients who received mean tidal volumes of ≤ 7, > 7 to ≤ 8, > 8 to ≤ 9, and > 9 mL/kg predicted body weight, respectively. A reduced incidence of postoperative AKI was reported in relation to intraoperative low tidal volume ventilation during cardiovascular surgery. For decreasing AKI incidence following a cardiovascular operation, lowering tidal volume might afford a simple strategy.
