Effects of increasing levothyroxine on pregnancy outcomes in women with uncontrolled hypothyroidism
Clinical Endocrinology Jan 19, 2019
Maraka S, et al. - Since uncontrolled hypothyroidism has been associated with an increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, researchers evaluated the efficacy of increasing the dose of levothyroxine (LT4) to reduce the risk of adverse outcomes for pregnant women with TSH level greater than the recommended 1st trimester limit. Electronic medical records of pregnant women assessed from January 2011 to December 2013, who had history of LT4-treated hypothyroidism and were found to have TSH > 2.5 mU/L in 1st trimester were reviewed. Findings suggested an association of increasing LT4 dose with a decreased risk of pregnancy loss for women with uncontrolled hypothyroidism in the first trimester of pregnancy. Overall, they concluded that increasing LT4 therapy has the potential to decrease pregnancy loss in women with uncontrolled hypothyroidism.
