Konno R, et al. - Given that hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibody-positivity adversely affects cardiac function and the screening for HCV only began in 1992, researchers investigated whether HCV antibody-positivity rate would be high in individuals with adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) who had heart surgery prior to 1992 and adversely influenced cardiac function and long-term prognosis. Data from 243 retrospectively enrolled individuals with ACHD (mean age, 25.9 years) who had cardiac surgery before 1992 and visited the hospital from 1995 to 2015 were analyzed. Event-free survival was significantly poorer in the HCV antibody-positive group vs the HCV antibody-negative group. In contrast, composite endpoint (including cardiac death, heart failure hospitalization, lethal ventricular arrhythmias, and cardiac reoperation) was not significantly predicted by HCV RNA-positivity among the HCV antibody-positive group. Findings suggested that more attention to HCV antibody-positivity in the management of patients with ACHD patients is warranted.
