Effects of fluoxetine on outcomes at 12 months after acute stroke: Results from EFFECTS, a randomized controlled trial

Stroke Oct 01, 2021

Lundström E, Isaksson E, Norin NG, et al. - Fluoxetine had no influence on functional outcome at 12 months following an acute stroke. Patients given fluoxetine performed worse on the Stroke Impact Scale in memory and communication when compared with placebo, however, this is most likely due to chance.

  • Between 2014 and 2019, 1,500 individuals were recruited from 35 Swedish centers; 750 were given fluoxetine and 750 were given a placebo.

  • At 12 months, modified Rankin Scale data were available for 715 (95%) of fluoxetine patients and 712 (95%) of placebo patients.

  • In both groups, the distribution of modified Rankin Scale categories was similar.

  • Patients given fluoxetine performed worse on the Stroke Impact Scale memory domain with a median value of 89 (interquartile range, 75–100) vs 93 (interquartile range, 82–100); P = 0.0021 and communication 93 (interquartile range, 82–100) vs 96 (interquartile range, 86–100); P = 0.024.

  • In terms of secondary outcomes, there were no other changes.
