Effects of establishing a trauma center on the mortality rate among injured pediatric patients in Japan
PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases May 30, 2019
Muguruma T, et al. - Researchers examined the efficacy of trauma centers for the treatment of injured pediatric patients via appraising children’s mortality before and after the establishment a trauma center. They used standard mortality ratios and a modified observed-expected chart in this single-center, retrospective chart review study of 143 subjects [45 (31%) preschoolers aged < 6 years, and 43 (30%) with an injury severity score (ISS) ≥ 16] transported to the trauma center by the emergency medical services from 2012 to 2016 in Japan. Following the trauma centers' establishment, there was an increase in the number of patients (70% increase per month) and an increase in the number of patients with an ISS of 41–75. The centralization of pediatric trauma patients to trauma centers led to an improvement in the morality of injured pediatric patients. The after group compared to the non-trauma center group showed a decrease in The time interval from hospital admission to initiation of computed tomography (15.5 vs 33 minutes) and to definitive care (44 vs 64.5 minutes).
