Effects of different ascorbic acid doses on the mortality of critically ill patients: A meta-analysis
Annals of Intensive Care May 24, 2019
Wang Y, et al. - Via conducting this meta-analysis that included over 1,000 patients, researchers assessed how mortality in critically ill adults is influenced by ascorbic acid (AA) dose. They searched electronic databases to identify trials using AA that was administered intravenously to critically ill patients irrespective of the dose or the co-administration of antioxidant agents. All-cause mortality at final follow-up was the predefined primary outcome. Findings revealed attenuated mortality with intravenous AA doses of 3–10 g/d. Reduced duration of vasopressor support and mechanical ventilation was reported in relation to AA. No impact on fluid requirement or urine output during the first 24 hours of admission was evident.
