Effects of dietary intervention and n-3 PUFA supplementation on markers of gut-related inflammation and their association with cardiovascular events in a high-risk population
Atherosclerosis May 09, 2019
Awoyemi A, et al. - In 484 men (aged 65-75 years) who were at high cardiovascular (CV)-risk, researchers determined if n-3 PUFA supplementation and/or diet counselling could be effective in modulating circulating markers of gut-related inflammation, lipopolysaccharide binding protein and soluble CD14. They also investigated if these markers were associated with CV outcome. Using a 2 × 2 factorial design, the participants were randomized to 36-month intervention with dietary counseling, n-3 PUFA supplementation, or both. They found a link between markers of gut-related inflammation and 36-month CV outcome in the studied population. However, these markers remained uninfluenced by n-3 PUFA supplementation or diet intervention.
