Effects of deep sedation on sleep in critically ill medical patients on mechanical ventilation

Journal of Sleep Research Aug 01, 2019

Jean R, Shah P, Yudelevich E, et al. - In critically ill mechanically ventilated patients both pre- and post-extubation, researchers explored the connection between sleep architecture and sedation. For this prospective observational repeated measures study, 50 mechanically ventilated patients with 31 paired analyses were examined at an academic medical center. Investigators found that sedated patients on mechanical ventilation had greater sleep efficiency and higher atypia vs the same patients after extubation. In contrast to fentanyl, propofol and fentanyl, or no sedation, propofol was linked to higher sleep duration and less disrupted sleep architecture.
