Effects of corrective strabismus surgery on social anxiety and self-consciousness in adults
Journal of AAPOS Oct 11, 2020
Estes KJ, Parrish RK, Sinacore J, et al. - In the present study, the researchers reported the outcomes of a questionnaire-based interventional study to assess the impacts of strabismus surgery on private self-consciousness, public self-consciousness, and social anxiety utilizing a validated self-consciousness survey instrument. Patients who underwent strabismus surgery completed a pre- and postoperative demographic and self-consciousness scale form. Overall improvement was observed postoperatively in total scores, public self-consciousness scores, and social anxiety scores. The finding indicates that strabismus surgery can lead to improved public self-consciousness and social anxiety beyond functional and cosmetic improvements, with the greatest impact noted in esotropic, college graduates and non-single patients.
