Effects of bariatric surgery on maternal and infant outcomes of pregnancy—An evidence analysis center systematic review
Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics May 02, 2019
Al-Nimr RI, et al. - Researchers investigated how bariatric surgery influence both maternal and infant health outcomes of pregnancy via performing a systematic review according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Evidence Analysis Library process. They included 13 of 246 studies. Outcomes revealed reduced infant birth weight in grams in correlation to bariatric surgery before pregnancy, with no effect on total maternal gestational weight gain or Apgar scores when a comparison to body mass index–matched controls without surgery was done. Risk of adverse outcomes, such as miscarriage and/or stillbirth, preterm birth, or infant complications, did not increase in correlation to surgery. They noted inconsistent effects of surgery on maternal complications, infant birth weight categories, and surgical delivery rates.
