Effects of an aging population and racial demographics on eye disease prevalence: Projections for Georgia through 2050

American Journal of Ophthalmology Nov 18, 2019

Kelly E, et al. - In this population prevalence projection study, researchers presented a state-level forecast of the future visual impairment burden and its causes in Georgia state adults by 2050, accounting for age and race demographics. According to findings, an estimated 226,000 visually impaired people will exist in Georgia in 2050, and almost 100,000 will be blind. In those 80 and older, there will be an increase in visual impairment of over 350% by 2050. There will be a projected 1.7 million cataract cases, 2.3 million refractive error cases, more than 250,000 glaucoma cases and 117,000 macular degeneration cases. In adults age 40 and older, the total caseload of diabetic retinopathy is expected to increase by 150% between 2015 and 2040. The aging population and racial demographics impact future eye disease burden projections, causing projections at the state level to vary from the national level. As demand for eye services increases, states need to have individualized projections to assess the unique challenges they face and prepare for improved service delivery, educational campaigns, and advocacy that match their state's need.
