Effects of Alzheimer disease and Lewy body disease on subcortical atrophy
European Journal of Neurology Oct 14, 2019
Yoo HS, Lee EC, Chung SJ, et al. - In this cross-sectional study involving 42 patients with pure Alzheimer disease (AD) related cognitive impairment (ADCI), 30 patients with pure Lewy body disease (LBD) related cognitive impairment (LBCI), 58 patients with mixed ADCI and LBCI, and 29 normal individuals, researchers examined the impacts of AD and LBD on subcortical atrophy and their association with cognitive dysfunction. According to findings, the cognitive impairment associated with AD and LBCI were independently associated with subcortical atrophies in the hippocampus and amygdala and hippocampus and putamen respectively, however, their interaction impact was not important. The pure LBCI group showed additional local atrophies in the amygdala, caudate and thalamus compared with the control group. Subcortical atrophies patterns and their cognitive dysfunction association vary depending on the underlying AD, LBD and concomitant AD and LBD.
