Effects of Alzheimer disease and Lewy body disease on subcortical atrophy
European Journal of Neurology Jan 29, 2020
Yoo HS, Lee EC, Chung SJ, et al. - In this cross-sectional study involving 42 individuals with pure Alzheimer disease (AD) related cognitive impairment (ADCI), 30 patients with pure Lewy body disease (LBD) related cognitive impairment (LBCI), 58 patients with mixed ADCI and LBCI, and 29 normal subjects, researchers sought to analyze the impacts of AD and LBD on subcortical atrophy and their association with cognitive dysfunction. According to results, AD related cognitive impairment and LBCI were independently linked to subcortical atrophies in the hippocampus and amygdala and in the hippocampus and putamen respectively, but their interaction effect was not important. The pure LBCI group showed additional local atrophies in the amygdala, caudate and thalamus compared with the control group. Subcortical atrophies patterns and their correlation with cognitive dysfunction vary according to the underlying AD, LBD or concomitant AD and LBD.
