Effects of alcohol consumption and metabolic syndrome on mortality in patients with nonalcoholic and alcohol-related fatty liver disease
Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology Feb 15, 2019
Younossi ZM, et al. - Investigators evaluated the impact of alcohol consumption and metabolic syndrome on mortality in patients with non-alcoholic and alcohol-related fatty liver disease. Via a search of the National Health and Nutrition and Examination Survey III, they identified 4,264 adults (aged 20-74 years) with hepatic steatosis for whom mortality and follow-up data were available and included them in the analysis. Findings suggested an association of alcohol consumption with increased mortality in patients with fatty liver and metabolic syndrome. Overall, there was an overlap between non-alcoholic and alcohol-related fatty liver disease.
