Effects of adjunctive N-acetylcysteine on depressive symptoms: Modulation by baseline high-sensitivity C-reactive protein
Psychiatry Research Mar 19, 2018
Porcu M, et al. - Researchers here reported the outcomes in RCTs of 12 weeks assessing the clinical efficacy of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) as an adjunctive treatment on depression and anxiety symptoms and its effects on high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels. Reduction in depressive and anxiety symptoms was observed with add-on NAC treatment when baseline hs-CRP > 3 mg/L. Add-on NAC treatment contributed to improve work impairment when baseline hs-CRP > 3 mg/L. They recommended assessing plasma levels of hs-CRP before treatment in individuals with depressive symptoms. Add–on NAC treatment was observed contributing reduced hs-CRP levels.
