Effects of a whey protein pre‐meal on bone turnover in participants with and without type 2 diabetes—A post hoc analysis of a randomised, controlled, crossover trial
Diabetic Medicine May 28, 2021
Bjørnshave A, Lykkeboe S, Hartmann B, et al. - Researchers conducted this randomised, controlled, crossover trial to assess the impacts of a whey protein pre‐meal on bone turnover in individuals with type 2 diabetes and controls. A pre-meal of whey protein (20 g) or water, consumed 15 minutes before a fat-rich meal or a fat-rich meal supplemented with 20 g whey protein, was given to 12 participants with type 2 diabetes and 12 participants without type 2 diabetes, who were matched on gender, age, and BMI. Postprandial responses in bone turnover were examined during a 360‐min period. Following meal ingestion, osteocalcin, P‐procollagen type 1 amino-terminal propeptide, C‐terminal cross‐linked telopeptide of type‐I collagen and parathyroid hormone all decreased. A whey protein pre-meal had no discernible effect on bone turnover. These findings, on the other hand, indicate that people with type 2 diabetes have low bone turnover and that the lower bone formation markers extend into postprandial responses.
