Effects of a home-based exercise program on anxiety and mood disturbances in older adults with cancer receiving chemotherapy
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society May 03, 2019
Loh KP, et al. - In 252 older patients (aged 60 years or older) with cancer who were undergoing chemotherapy, researchers investigated how anxiety, mood, and social and emotional well-being in these subjects were influenced by exercise. For the first 6 weeks of chemotherapy, participants were randomized to Exercise for Cancer Patients (EXCAP) or usual care (control). EXCAP is a home-based program that includes low- to moderate-intensity progressive walking and resistance training. Improved anxiety and mood were observed in relation to a 6-week structured exercise program for older cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Such improvements were particularly evident among those participants with worse baseline symptoms.
