Effectiveness, safety, and predictive potential in ultrasound‐guided stellate ganglion blockades for the treatment of sympathetically maintained pain
Pain Practice Apr 10, 2020
Aleanakian R, et al. - Researchers evaluated effectiveness of stellate ganglion blockades (SGBs) when performed under ultrasound‐guidance (us‐SGB). Further, they sought factors predictive of effectiveness. They performed retrospective analysis of 809 us‐SGBs in 105 patients with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and neuropathic pain syndromes (all potentially including sympathetically maintained pain) concerning pain reduction. Per data gained, sympathetically maintained pain in patients with CRPS and neuropathic pain syndromes reduces safely and effectively in correlation to receiving us‐SGBs. Total pain reduction after a blockade series may be predicted with pain reduction measures following the first blockade. In a literature comparison, lower incidences of complications (hoarseness 3.9 %, dysphagia 3.4 %, hematoma 0.6 %) were reported when compared with non‐ultrasound‐guided techniques.
