BMC Oral Health Jul 27, 2021
Oshvandi K, Vafaei SY, Kamallan SR, et al. - Researchers undertook this randomized control trial study to determine the impact of zinc chloride mouthwash on the prevention, incidence, as well as severity of oral mucositis among cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Total 96 patients with a cancer diagnosis were included and randomized to the zinc chloride group and placebo group. In each group, patients were asked to rinse their mouths every 8 h two times and each time 2 min with 7.5 ml from mouthwash. At the end of the second and third week, the observed incidence as well as severity of oral mucositis between groups were significantly higher. During the third week, the severity of mucositis reduced well in the zinc chloride group. A significantly higher difference in the weight loss was observed between the zinc chloride and the placebo group. Overall, findings demonstrated the effectiveness of zinc chloride mouthwash for not only preventing and decreasing the severity of oral mucositis but also for improving weight in patients receiving chemotherapy.
