Effectiveness of ursodeoxycholic acid in the prevention of cholelithiasis after sleeve gastrectomy
Obesity Surgery Apr 07, 2019
Coupaye M, et al. - In order to assess the effectiveness of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) on gallstone formation after the first postoperative year, researchers compared patients treated or not treated with UDCA regarding the incidence of cholelithiasis (CL) at 1 and 3 years after sleeve gastrectomy (SG). In the 46 non-treated patients, CL incidence of 28% at 1 year after SG was observed and in the 143 treated patients, 3.5% was noted. The proportion of cholecystectomies reduced from 11% to 1.4% using UDCA. Outcomes revealed the efficacy of and well tolerability to UDCA 500 mg once daily for 6 months postoperatively to prevent CL at midterm after SG. All patients with an intact preoperative gallbladder should receive UDCA treatment after SG.
