Effectiveness of routine third trimester ultrasonography to reduce adverse perinatal outcomes in low-risk pregnancy (the IRIS study): Nationwide, pragmatic, multicentre, stepped wedge cluster randomized trial
BMJ Oct 22, 2019
Henrichs J, Verfaille V, Jellema P, et al. - Through a pragmatic, multicentre, stepped wedge cluster randomized trial of 60 midwifery practices in the Netherlands of 13,046 women (intervention; n = 7,067, usual care; n = 5,979) aged 16 years or older with a low-risk singleton pregnancy, researchers examined the efficiency of routine ultrasonography in the third trimester in decreasing adverse perinatal outcomes in low risk pregnancies in comparison usual care and the impact of this policy on maternal outcomes and obstetric interventions. In low-risk pregnancies, in comparison with usual care alone, routine ultrasonography along with clinically designated ultrasonography in the third trimester was related to greater antenatal detection of small for gestational age fetuses, however, not with a decreased incidence of critical adverse perinatal outcomes. Nevertheless, in the third trimester, the findings did not recommend routine ultrasonography for low-risk pregnancies.
