Effectiveness of pulmonary rehabilitation in severe asthma: A retrospective data analysis
Journal of Asthma Aug 19, 2019
Zampogna E, Centis R, Negri S, et al. - Among retrospectively included patients with severe asthma, researchers determined how functional exercise, dyspnea, and muscle fatigue were influenced by pulmonary rehabilitation (PR). Patients (n = 317) who participated in a multidisciplinary 3 weeks rehabilitation program and showed adherence of > 80% to PR and completed a Six Minute Walking Test (6MWT) were included. The sample comprised 39 patients with bronchiectasis, 163 with obstructive sleep apnea (OSAS), and 17 with both. Significant improvement in 6MWT distance, Borg dyspnea and muscle fatigue and mean SpO2 recorded during 6MWT was observed among those who received PR. In a large sample of patients with severe asthma, the efficacy of a multidisciplinary PR program in terms of exercise capacity and symptoms was evident for the first time. Additionally, improvement in the exercise capacity was noted in the presence of bronchiectasis and/or OSAS.
