Effectiveness of maternal pertussis vaccination in preventing infection and disease in infants: The NSW Public Health Network case-control study
Vaccine Mar 16, 2018
Saul N, et al. - Maternal pertussis vaccination with a 3-component tetanus-diphtheria-acellular pertussis vaccine was assessed as a strategy to prevent infection and disease in infants. For preventing severe disease in infants, maternal pertussis vaccination with a 3-component acellular vaccine was found to be highly effective. However, this was noted to be less effective at preventing disease which did not require hospitalisation. Compared with prior studies, lower overall vaccine effectiveness was reported in this study. It was also suggested that maternal vaccination, while an effective strategy at preventing severe pertussis, is less effective at protecting against infection or mild disease.
